These verses speak of doing good and how to deal with those who do not. Verse 9-10 are the study verses, but context is much needed. Verses 1-10 tell a better story.
Doing Good to All
6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Love the person and hate the sin. Something I think is a very hard concept because it can tear apart feelings and emotions for those that are closest to us. It’s always easier when the situation isn’t near and dear to us. Also, don’t deceive yourself by thinking you are something you are not. Test your own actions against the scripture. Don’t think God can be deceived. He sees everything! We completely reap what we sow. Do good, and never question the good we do because good always trumps evil. Finally, always do good for everyone.
Don’t look at others with labels, but look at everyone for who they are…a child of God. Even if they do bad. God sees it, it’s not our place to judge. Love the person as God has loved us! We reap what we sow, so do unto others as we want them to do to us. And we want love and acceptance just for who we are. Call on God to help when others cannot. Turn to the bible which is as true today as it was back when written.
Lord, help me to look inward before passing judgement on anyone else. Help me to see that we are all Your children and all deserve to be accepted. Help me to love the person, but rebuke the sin that I know is wrong without passing judgement. Make me aware that I will reap what I sow and that if I want understanding and forgiveness that I must too give it, especially to those that I don’t want to. Remind me to always do good and the sacrifice that Jesus did for me…and that He only saw the good in me. I pray for this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
