Our message continues today as we strive toward knowing God better! Let’s dig into Colossians. Another of the churches Paul addresses.
9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, (NIV)
Doesn’t this sound familiar? It is practically the same thing Paul said yesterday to the Ephesisans. Today, he is addressing the Colossians. My observations are virtually the same. Paul continues to pray so that we many experience a life full of the Lord, but also, so that we please Him in everything we do. If we do that, we should bear fruit in our good works, and grow in the knowledge of God.
The application here is different than yesterday, but very important. It’s a message we read deeper into. The prayer is that we are filled with the spirit and are given knowledge, wisdom and understanding. These things are given to us so that we may bear fruit in our good works and grow in our knowledge of the Lord. What these verses do not say is that only by doing this to we earn God’s love for us. We already have His love…He just wants so much more for us!
Lord, Your love for me is greater than anything I will ever know in my life. Your spirit fills me so that I can gain the wisdom and knowledge of Your will for me. This has nothing to do with Your love for me. Help me Lord to realize this and not put a condition on the love You have for me. In Jesus Name, I pray. Amen.
